"A member of Cuba's celebrated Lopez family, 68-year-old Buena Vista Social Club bassist Orlando Cachaito Lopez is one of the outstanding Latin American bassists to emerge in recent decades ... Cachaito, Diaz, and Amadito are masters, beyond merely showing off. They get something going and the others fall in with tasty statements. It's also nice that there's some charanga influence here, with violinist Pedro Depestre and flutist Polo Tamayo adding their comments. Nothing spectacular happens per se, but all of the tracks have that same certain magic that permeates almost all the BVSC albums, and this one is no exception"

"The only "solo" album in a career lasting six decades, this Buena Vista Social Club spin-off by the Cuban enemble's bassist has strong claim to be the finest of all those that followed that eight million-selling behemoth. Much of its success comes down to López's openness ... His jazz heroes were Mingus and Scott LaFaro, and few double-bass players were as influential as his uncle Israel "Cachao" López, but here modest Cachaito makes his own space, setting down a rock-solid groove for others (...) to jam on. Though he rarely occupies the foreground, the way his bass leaps out of the speakers tells you who's in charge"

"Album pick" - "Buena Vista Club mainstay Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez, who is widely regarded as the best bassist in Cuba ... At times the tracks seem more like studio jams than fully realized songs, but the album's overall feel -- self-assured, relaxed, warm, even somewhat jocular -- is quite appealing. The musicianship, of course, is impeccable ..."
